  • Code: Existing Building
  • Edition: 2021
  • Chapter:
  • Section: 702.5
  • Topic: FBC Existing Buildings 702.5 and 505.3 Replacement window emergency escape and rescue openings.
  • Question:
Is it the intent of section 702.5(1) and 505.3(1) Replacement window emergency escape and rescue openings; to be interpreted as “ The replacement window shall be permitted to be the same operating style as the existing window” and stop there; or; does “provides for an equal or greater window opening area that the existing window” apply to both the “same operating style” (single hung for single hung, slider for slider) and “a style” (impact vs non-impact)?
  • Comments:
There appears to be two interpretations of 702.5(1) and 505.3(1) where “provides for an equal or greater window opening area than the existing opening” applies to the part after the word “or”, which would allow the same operating style replacement window to lessen the opening area. Second way to interpret is that “provides for equal or greater window opening are that the existing opening” applies to both parts of the sentence thus not allowing the same operating style replacement window to decrease opening area.
