  • Code: Residential
  • Edition: 2021
  • Chapter:
  • Section: R4501
  • Topic: Pool barrier
  • Question:
Will my fence be considered compliant with r4501 if I have met the requirements as described herein below: the height of the fence is over 48 in tall from the ground surface, the bottom of the fence has a clearance of 2 in or less from the fence to the ground surface, there are no openings in the fence that are greater than a 4-in sphere could fit through, the fence gate opens outward and is self closing and the latch is higher than 50 inches from the ground?
  • Comments:
The fence is to be used as a pool barrier. I have been told I must be compliant with the entire section of 4501 which includes alternate regulations for different styles of fence. Such as chain link or wire mesh fences with a 2-in opening, and vertical panel fences with openings of 1 and 3/4 inches. Since my fence is not one of these styles it would be impossible for one barrier to comply with all of the sections. One person would need to build multiple fences such as a mesh fence, a wall, a diagonal fence, and a vertical fence to comply with all of the specifications. I'm curious if the specifications I mentioned previously are the minimum required general specifications for fences that are not suggested with the specific designs listed in the code.
